Set against the backdrop of a looming World War III and a falling bomb, Aleksandr celebrates his birthday with friends. He alone grasps the full extent of the catastrophe and resolves to sacrifice his possessions to beseech God to avert disaster. His interactions are marked by philosophical discourse, with a postman spouting Nietzschean quotes. Tarkovsky characterized the protagonist as an anti-hero, a thinker, and an honest man, risking misunderstanding from those around him who perceive his actions as desperate rather than resolute.
