Set in Porto, the story follows a group of children playing along the riverbanks, where the shy Carlitos competes with the mischievous Eduardo for the affection of a young girl named Terezinha. After Carlitos steals a doll as a token of his feelings, he becomes the target of an unfair accusation involving a much more serious crime. This incident forces the young boy to grapple with complex adult realities, including fear, social pressure, and the struggle for justice. It remains a foundational work that captures the raw, unsentimental perspective of childhood.
